The JewelExplorer

At the top of the JewelExplorer is a toolbar with the following icons:

	Collapse All  Collapses all of the sub folders in the JewelExplorer so that only the top-level folders are shown.
	Collapse All Children  Collapses the sub folders of the selected folder.
	Expands All Expands all folders and subfolders so that all items in the JewelExplorer are shown.
	Hide all  Clears all checked boxes in the JewelExplorer, removing all objects from the active view. For example, clicking Hide all while a 3D View is active will remove all objects from the view, but won't change the visibility of objects in any other views you have open.
	Zoom in  Increases the size of the text.
	Zoom out  Reduces the size of the text.
	Find  Opens a text field. Fill in a search term and press enter to only display items in the JewelExplorer that contain the term you entered. The search is not case sensitive. Press escape to clear the text field and display all items in the JewelExplorer. Click the Find icon again to close the text field and show all items in the JewelExplorer again.

You can quickly explore the objects and properties in your project by clicking the and buttons to expand and collapse branches in the tree.

As a quick way of transferring data, you can open solutions on separate instances of JewelSuite 2026.1 Subsurface Modeling and drag and drop the objects from the JewelExplorer of one instance into the JewelExplorer of the other instance.

The table below shows how drag and drop feature works for the following type of data:

Every object type in the JewelExplorer has a 'Duplicate' option in the context menu to create a copy inside the same solution.

Apart from displaying all the objects in your project, the JewelExplorer provides a powerful way to select what to show in your view area. Check or uncheck the checkbox in front of an item in the JewelExplorer to display or hide the item in the active view. Note that to display well logs in the 3D View, not only the well and relevant log need to be checked under the Well Data > Wells item in the JewelExplorer, but also the log (under Well Data > All Logs). Checking or unchecking the checkbox of a higher level item (category) displays or hides all the objects in that category. If you wish to hide all objects in the active view, click Hide all .

For most types of objects, you can show or hide all the child items from the parent folder level. Right-click the folder and select Show All or Hide All from the context menu. When you select Show All, only the objects that can be made visible in the active view are shown.

To configure the JewelExplorer to automatically expand the folder structure and highlight objects that you select in the active view, do the following:

1. Go to home > Settings > Options > Display Settings.
2. On the Display Settings form, select the Panels > JewelExplorer item.
3. Select the checkbox Expand related folder in JewelExplorer and highlight the object that is selected in the active view.
4. Click OK to save the settings and close the form.

In the JewelExplorer, the checkbox in front of objects can have one of the following statuses to indicate its visibility.

	The object is visualized in the active view.
	The object is not visualized in the active view.
	Only for 3D grid properties, mesh properties, and properties of a point set - Indicates that the Use as Combined Filter context menu option for the property is selected and its filter (as set in the property's Object Inspector) is active in the view while displaying another property of the 3D grid, 3D mesh or point set.
	Indicates that the Use as Overlay context menu option for the property is selected, and the property is projected on another property in the 3D View.
	The object cannot be visualized in the active view. For example, in the Well View, a seismic volume is disabled.
	Only for Cross Section View or when Object Visibility Control is turned on for a Cross Section - The object/property can be (but is not) visualized in the Cross Section (View).
	Only for Cross Section View or when Object Visibility Control is turned on for a Cross Section - The object/property is visualized in the Cross Section (View).

When you click on an object in the JewelExplorer to select it (it becomes highlighted), you can view detailed information about it, edit its properties and change its display settings in the Inspector (by default, shown on the right of your screen). See Using the Inspector for more on this.

The JewelExplorer also provides easy ways to perform various actions on your objects. If you right-click on an object, the JewelExplorer displays a context menu. The options available will depend on the type of object (see Using the object context menus for more on this). For example, you can order horizons by depth or by name, or you can select only tri-mesh representations.

You can directly edit the names of objects in the JewelExplorer. Double-click an item and enter the new name. If it exists in multiple models you will be prompted with the option to rename throughout all the models or not.

You can select multiple items in the JewelExplorer by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking each of the items you want to select, or by holding down the Shift key to select a range of items.

When selecting multiple items, if your aim is to select all items of a certain type or property, you can do so through the context menu at the folder level for the items in the JewelExplorer. For example, by using the context menu option Select by Property Type, it would be possible to select the Dip property for each of a particular item in the selected folder (Horizons, for example) without having to manually expand each horizon and then select its Dip property. The option Select by Representation is also available, and allows you to select all items of a certain geometric representation.

The following video shows a simple usage example for the Select by Representation option. The Select by Property Type option works similarly.

In addition to the standard Windows™ method of selecting multiple items, you can also easily select all the child items of a particular folder or object. Simply select a folder or object and press Ctrl+A to select all the child items of that object. For example, to select all of your wells you can select the top-level Wells folder and press Ctrl+A. With all the wells selected, you can open the context menu of the wells and quickly make changes to all your wells at once, or show them all in your view by pressing the space bar. 

De-select the objects by pressing Ctrl+A again or by clicking on another object in the JewelExplorer. 

Each object is shown with an icon indicating its type. Properties have a clipboard icon. In addition to these, there are special icon indicators in the JewelExplorer.

	Color indicators  are very convenient in combination with the 3D View; you have a visual connection between the displayed object and the corresponding object in the JewelExplorer. Colors can be changed in the Inspector.
	The time icon indicates time based or realization based properties. Time properties can be animated in the 3D view using the Time Animation tool. Realization properties can be animated in the 3D view using the realization slider in the Inspector. You can move the slider in the Inspector by first selecting the property, then pressing the left and right arrows on your keyboard.
	(Only when you are working in DMS.) A little green dot next to an icon (in this example, a well) indicates that the object has been updated (see Object Updates).

In your modeling, you may end up with a great many objects, especially if you look at different options and 'what if?' scenarios.

Although each object you import or create will automatically appear in the JewelExplorer in the appropriate top-level folder, you may find it convenient to organize related objects into folders. Not only will this help you find things easily, you can also then select all the objects in the folder with a single click and view them together in your view area.

To create a new folder, right-click at an appropriate location in the JewelExplorer (inside a faults or horizons folder in the Imports, Data, Surface Sets or Seismic Interpretation folder for example) and select New Folder from the context menu. Double click on the folder in the JewelExplorer to rename it.

Drag and drop items to move them in and out of your folders.

In the Imports and Data folders in the JewelExplorer, apart from using folders, you can also use groups. The main difference between working with groups instead of folders, is that an event can be in multiple groups, but can only be in one folder.

The advantage of organizing your data in groups over folders is that events inside a group can be of different types. You can place e.g., both faults and horizons into one group. Same as working with folders, not only helps you find things easily, but you can also select all the events in a group with a single click and view them together in your view area.

To create a new group, right-click on the Imports or Data folder in the JewelExplorer and select Create New Group from the context menu. Double click on the group in the JewelExplorer to rename it.

Drag and drop events to move them into your groups. Although events can be in multiple groups simultaneously, you cannot drag and drop events from one group to another. Alternatively, you can also add an event using the Add to Group context menu option and then selecting the desired group.
